Dans les pays anglo-saxons il est resté un système de hauts grades exclusivement. C'est en France, au début du XIXe siècle, que ce système, nouvellement arrivé d'Amérique, en 1801, par le Suprême Conseil de Charleston, voulut se doter, en 1804, des trois grades des loges bleues. Le Guide des maçons écossais qui correspond à la forme achevée des premiers rituels du Rite Écossais Ancien et Accepté, situe expressément ce rite dans le sillage de la maçonnerie des Antients. Il fait de larges emprunts au manuscrit intitulé les Trois coups Distincts ( Three Distinct Knocks) de 1760, document de référence du rituel des Antients 1• On note parmi les différentes caractéristiques de ce rite : -Le Vénérable ouvre la loge au nom de Dieu et de Saint Jean d'Écosse -La présence de deux Diacres. Le rite pratiqué est celui de la première Grande Loge de Londres, celle dite des Moderns. C'est le seul rite pratiqué connu par les loges bleues au XVIW siècle en France. Le texte du Régulateur du maçon correspond à la version imprimée du rituel officiel du GODF largement inspiré d'un texte des Moderns intitulé jachin et Boaz. Ce rite considéré comme spécifiquement français, provenant de la pratique des Moderns, sous le titre de Rite Moderne ou Rite Français désigne le système adopté par le Grand Orient de France entre 1783 et 1801 sous l'impulsion de Roëttiers de Montaleau. Il s'agit d'un système complet en sept grades, il se décompose en trois grades symboliques (ou loges bleues) et quatre ordres supérieurs (ou hauts grades). Ces derniers vont tomber en désuétude dans le dernier tiers du XIXe siècle et être réanimés à la fin du xxe siècle. Le Rite Français a subi de considérables remaniements dans les années 1880 1887 sous l'inspiration de Louis Amiable qui se réfère largement au positivisme. En 1907, Jean-Baptiste Blatin va modifier légèrement le rituel et en donner une nouvelle mouture, toujours dans le même esprit, à tendance moralisatrice et visant à en éliminer les éléments symboliques. En 1938, Arthur Groussier, alors Grand Maître du Grand Orient de France va en faire adopter une nouvelle version. Au final, les éléments symboliques qui se trouvent dans le Régulateur disparaissent pour beaucoup, entre autres la présence en loge des trois piliers et du tableau de loge.
